Reliance Intelligence is building a sovereign AI backbone in Jamnagar, says Akash Ambani

Reliance Intelligence is embarking on a significant venture to create a comprehensive sovereign artificial intelligence infrastructure in Jamnagar, with plans for the first phase to be operational by the end of 2026. This announcement was made by Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm, during the company's 49th annual general meeting held on June 19. The project aims to establish a robust AI backbone, with a preliminary phase featuring a capacity of 120 MW. This initiative is part of Reliance Industries' broader strategy to develop an all-encompassing AI ecosystem that includes computing infrastructure, cloud services, AI models, and consumer-oriented applications. Ambani highlighted the deployment of Nvidia’s advanced GB300 graphics processing units (GPUs) which are crucial for meeting the demanding computational needs of large AI models. "Reliance Intelligence will ensure sovereign AI hosting within India, guaranteeing full transparency and portability of AI models," Ambani stated. He emphasized that enterprises will retain ownership and control over their AI models while leveraging India's sovereign AI framework. Additionally, the company is enhancing its collaboration with Google to extend generative AI services to Jio's extensive user base. Ambani noted that this partnership has transformed into an AI-first alliance, providing Google AI Pro, powered by Gemini, to users at no cost. Jio is also focusing on developing AI tools and services tailored for Indian languages, aiming to broaden access beyond just English-speaking populations. "What we are building is AI for India, AI by India, and AI that will one day serve the world," Ambani remarked. He further outlined that Reliance Intelligence's long-term vision is to reduce the costs associated with artificial intelligence, making it more affordable for widespread use by the end of the decade. This strategic announcement underscores Reliance Industries' commitment to positioning AI at the forefront of its digital expansion efforts. Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, stressed the importance of treating AI self-sufficiency as a national priority, alongside energy security and access to essential technologies and minerals. "India should not just be a consumer of AI developed elsewhere; it must become a creator, adopter, and a global leader in AI," he asserted.
