Reliance Industries, one of India's largest conglomerates, has announced strategic partnerships with tech giants Google and Meta to enhance its artificial intelligence initiatives. This revelation was made during a recent shareholders' meeting, where Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani expressed the company's vision to leverage AI for significant growth. Ambani highlighted that digital services have served as a crucial growth engine for Reliance over the past decade, and he believes that the potential within the AI landscape is equally, if not more, promising. He introduced a new subsidiary called Reliance Intelligence, which aims to spearhead these AI-driven efforts. In a video message at the annual general meeting, Google CEO Sundar Pichai underscored that the collaboration will harness Google’s AI and cloud computing strengths to foster innovation across various sectors, including energy, retail, telecommunications, and finance. A new dedicated cloud region will be established in India, leveraging clean energy from Reliance and utilizing Jio's extensive network. Furthermore, a new joint venture with Meta aims to utilize the company’s open-source AI models, with the goal of creating “sovereign, enterprise-ready AI for India.” The partnership involves an initial investment of $100 million, split 70% by Reliance and 30% by Meta, as confirmed in a joint statement. Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg praised the collaboration as a significant advancement towards making AI accessible for all and ultimately achieving superintelligence. These partnerships mark a deeper engagement from U.S. technology firms in India, coinciding with the country’s economic growth. This is not the first instance of Google and Meta investing in Reliance; in 2020, Meta invested $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms, and Google followed with a $4.5 billion investment. As Reliance strengthens its ties with these tech leaders, this comes amid a complex backdrop of U.S.-India relations, particularly regarding trade policies and tariffs.
