Reliance unveils $110B AI investment plan as India ramps up tech ambitions

Mukesh Ambani, the billionaire chairman of Reliance Industries, announced a monumental ₹10 trillion (approximately $110 billion) initiative aimed at establishing advanced AI computing infrastructure across India over the next seven years. During his keynote at the India AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi, Ambani emphasized that this substantial investment will facilitate the construction of large-scale data centers, a comprehensive edge computing network, and innovative AI services integrated with Reliance's Jio telecom platform. Construction of multi-gigawatt data centers is already underway in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with Ambani revealing that over 120 megawatts of capacity is expected to be operational by the latter half of 2026. This significant commitment aligns with a broader trend of escalating AI investments in India, with Adani Group recently announcing its own plans to invest around $100 billion in AI data centers. Moreover, the Indian government anticipates an influx of over $200 billion in AI infrastructure spending in the next two years. International tech companies are also intensifying their efforts in the region, highlighted by OpenAI's collaboration with the Tata Group to develop an initial 100 megawatts of AI capacity, with plans to scale up to 1 gigawatt in the future. Ambani underscored the necessity of this initiative for achieving technological self-reliance in India, stating, "We cannot afford to rent intelligence," and asserting that Reliance aims to significantly reduce the costs associated with AI services, similar to how it transformed mobile data pricing in the country. "The primary obstacle in AI today is not a lack of talent or creativity, but rather the scarcity and high cost of computing power," Ambani noted. He further explained that the infrastructure development will be bolstered by Reliance's green energy capacity, which includes 10 gigawatts of surplus power sourced from solar initiatives in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. In addition, Reliance plans to collaborate with Indian enterprises, startups, and academic institutions to integrate AI technologies across various sectors, including manufacturing, logistics, agriculture, healthcare, and financial services. Jio has already made strides in the AI space, securing a partnership with Google to provide free access to Gemini AI Pro for millions of users in India. Ambani also mentioned plans to enhance AI capabilities in multiple Indian languages to encourage broader adoption of this transformative technology. This assertive strategy underscores the competitive landscape among India's largest conglomerates as they vie for a stake in what is anticipated to be a major technological breakthrough for the nation.
