Digg founder Kevin Rose on the need for trusted social communities in the AI era

In a recent discussion, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian shared his concerns about the 'dead internet theory' with Digg founder Kevin Rose, highlighting the prevalence of bots overshadowing genuine human interactions online. This conversation has sparked a collaboration between the two entrepreneurs aimed at redefining social communities in an era where distinguishing real users from bots is becoming increasingly challenging. Earlier this year, Rose and Ohanian took a significant step by acquiring the remaining assets of Digg, the once-popular news aggregation platform that Rose initially founded. With the rebirth of Digg under Rose's leadership, the platform aims to create a safe environment for users to connect within communities, drawing inspiration from Reddit while proposing innovative methods to address bot infiltration. During a panel at the TechCrunch Disrupt 2025 conference, Rose emphasized the importance of establishing secure online spaces, proposing the concept of 'micro communities of trusted users.' He noted, "As the cost of deploying bots decreases, we will inevitably see them masquerading as humans. Therefore, fostering small, trustworthy communities with a 'proof of heartbeat'—ensuring a real human is engaged—is crucial." Current verification techniques, like facial recognition and ID uploads, often deter users from participating in online communities. To address this concern, Digg is exploring advanced technologies such as zero-knowledge proofs (ZKP), which can validate a user’s identity without revealing personal details. For example, community moderators for specific interests, like Oura ring owners, could verify genuine ownership while maintaining user anonymity. Rose highlighted that empowering moderators within communities is vital for the new Digg, asserting that these key figures should receive compensation for their contributions. Reflecting on the early days of Digg in 2004, he remarked on the vast number of contributors who were not rewarded for their efforts. He drew parallels to Reddit, where moderators work tirelessly to maintain community standards without sharing in the platform’s profits or retaining user control. The challenges faced by community creators, particularly concerning trademark issues on platforms like Reddit, further underscore the need for reform. Rose advocates for a model akin to Substack or Patreon, which allows users greater control over their communities and the value they create. In a rapidly evolving digital landscape, Rose’s vision for Digg aims to cultivate a more trustworthy and user-centric social environment, ensuring that the voices behind online communities are recognized and valued.
