LinkedIn cofounder Reid Hoffman's go-to gift this Christmas was an AI-generated music album

Reid Hoffman, the co-founder of LinkedIn and a prominent investor at Greylock, has embraced artificial intelligence in a unique way this holiday season. Rather than opting for traditional gifts like cozy socks or warm sweaters, he chose to gift his friends and family a music album generated entirely by AI. Hoffman, whose net worth is estimated at $2.5 billion by Forbes, recently shared his creative venture with Wired. He utilized AI technology to compose whimsical Christmas songs, pressing them onto vinyl records. "There's a song about ugly sweaters and a humorous twist on the classics," he explained. "Think of it as something akin to what 'Weird Al' Yankovic might produce for a holiday album." To create this festive music, Hoffman employed two distinct AI systems: one for crafting the lyrics and another for composing the melodies. While he did not disclose the specific AI tools he used, Greylock, his investment firm, does not feature major music-generating applications like Suno, Udio, or AIVA in its portfolio. Hoffman expressed his delight with the results, noting that even his wife could not discern that the music was generated by a machine. This AI-infused gift aligns with Hoffman's ongoing discussions about the potential of artificial intelligence, as he promotes his new book, co-authored with journalist Greg Beato, titled "Superagency: What Could Possibly Go Right with Our AI Future." In the book, Hoffman and Beato tackle the prevalent fears surrounding AI, arguing that it need not lead to dystopian outcomes or mass job displacement. He emphasizes that skeptics are echoing past anxieties experienced with the advent of transformative technologies like the printing press, electricity, and the internet. "I encourage people to engage with AI in a way that is genuinely beneficial to them," Hoffman urged. "Yes, it will change the job landscape and bring challenges, but proactive engagement is key to navigating this transformation."
