Reid Hoffman says 15 people using AI can compete with 150 who aren't

The concept of the 'tiny team' has gained traction, as highlighted by Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn. In a recent LinkedIn post and during an episode of the 'Possible' podcast, Hoffman emphasized the competitive edge that small teams equipped with AI possess. He stated, '15 individuals using AI can outperform 150 who do not.' This statement underscores the transformative impact of AI on small team dynamics. Hoffman elaborated on the advantages that smaller groups have, noting that they often share a clearer context compared to larger organizations. He believes that AI enhances this clarity by enabling the development of systems that identify and highlight patterns within that shared context. Instead of merely seeking existing AI solutions for their challenges, Hoffman pointed out that AI-native startups tend to envision what their ideal solution would look like for their specific needs. 'Then they build it, even if it's in a rudimentary form,' he explained. In a discussion with AI engineer Parth Patil on the podcast, Hoffman provided an illustrative example where Patil utilized a blend of Codex and Claude Code to create a French translation tool for the podcast. They further experimented with the AI to refine the localization of the translation, with Codex offering the capability to enable translation for 68 additional languages, as noted by Patil. Hoffman remarked, 'What was once considered a monumental challenge—perhaps too costly to implement—now becomes straightforward for prototyping.' This sentiment echoes the experiences shared by Steven Bartlett, host of the 'Diary of a CEO' podcast, who mentioned at the World Economic Forum that translating his podcast into various languages, initially viewed as an 'expensive experiment,' ultimately proved to be a pivotal move for his business. 'Nothing has been more crucial for our operations than translations,' Bartlett asserted. In recent months, the discussion around AI has intensified, with numerous business and tech leaders indicating plans to replace certain human roles with AI technologies. Mark Zuckerberg from Meta, during a recent earnings call, noted that AI enables individuals to accomplish the workload of entire teams.
