Reed Hastings, co-founder of Netflix, has stirred conversation regarding the future of education by declaring that the focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is becoming 'overdone.' In a recent interview on the 'Possible' podcast, Hastings emphasized the importance of the humanities, suggesting that emotional fields such as entertainment, art, and sports will take precedence over technical skills in the evolving landscape shaped by artificial intelligence. Hastings remarked, "You're not going to watch a basketball game of robots," highlighting the limitations of AI in replicating human experiences that resonate on an emotional level. He acknowledged AI's proficiency in logic-based domains, predicting rapid advancements in areas like software engineering and medicine, but expressed a desire for a return to the humanities. "If I had a three-year-old today, I would be doubling down on the emotional skills," he stated, indicating a shift in educational priorities. Reflecting on the past two decades, Hastings noted the societal emphasis on coding and STEM education. However, he believes that recognition of the saturation in these fields will lead to a renewed interest in the humanities. As he prepares to step down from Netflix's board in June, Hastings is not alone in this sentiment. Craig Mundie, a former Microsoft executive, earlier voiced similar views, advocating for a curriculum that bridges the gap between humanities and technology. He expressed a desire for a liberal education that incorporates technological understanding. Furthermore, Steven Johnson, editorial director of Google NotebookLM, predicted a resurgence of the humanities in the age of AI, suggesting that those with degrees in language and humanities will be essential for refining large language models. Despite these perspectives, the debate continues, with other industry leaders like Okta CEO Todd McKinnon asserting the ongoing need for engineers and dismissing concerns that AI might eliminate software jobs as unfounded.
