‘Too early’ to talk IPO, Redwood Materials’ incoming CFO says

Redwood Materials has appointed Deepak Ahuja as its new chief financial officer, marking a significant transition for the battery recycling and energy storage firm. Ahuja, who previously served as Tesla's finance chief, joins an executive team that includes notable figures from the electric vehicle giant, such as CEO JB Straubel and CTO Colin Campbell. Most recently, Ahuja held the position of chief finance and business officer at Zipline, a drone delivery company. Despite his extensive experience in managing Tesla’s financial operations and the current surge in interest surrounding IPOs in the tech and AI sectors, Ahuja expressed caution regarding Redwood's potential public offering. "It’s too early to discuss going public," he stated in an interview with TechCrunch. Ahuja emphasized that while an IPO could be a future possibility for any private firm, Redwood Materials is currently thriving, having raised significant funds from reputable investors. In January, the company completed a $425 million Series E funding round, bringing its total capital raised to over $2 billion and increasing its valuation to more than $6 billion. Notably, both Google and Nvidia's venture arms have invested in Redwood. With the recent retirement of several key executives, including the chief operating officer, Ahuja's arrival comes at a crucial time. The company is undergoing a restructuring process that has affected about 10% of its workforce, approximately 135 employees, as it reallocates resources to its rapidly expanding energy storage division. Ahuja expressed enthusiasm for the innovative technology solutions at Redwood that aim to combat climate challenges and meet energy demands. He has remained closely connected with JB Straubel since they both departed from Tesla in 2019 and even holds a small investment in Redwood Materials. "It felt like a natural fit to join a company focused on critical energy needs and recycling," he noted. While the excitement surrounding AI and tech IPOs continues to grow, Ahuja remains grounded, stating that his and Straubel's experience has taught them the importance of cautious growth and management. "We’re dealing with hardware here, which inherently brings a degree of stability compared to the more volatile software-focused AI sector," he added.
