Redwood Materials lays off 10% in restructuring to chase energy storage business

Redwood Materials has recently announced a significant reduction in its workforce, laying off approximately 135 employees, which accounts for about 10% of its total staff. This decision is part of a strategic restructuring aimed at enhancing the company's focus on its burgeoning energy storage sector, according to reports from TechCrunch. These layoffs come just five months after a previous reduction of 5% of the workforce and follow a substantial $425 million funding round that elevated Redwood's valuation to over $6 billion. The battery industry has faced substantial challenges lately, with competitors like Ascend Elements filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy due to severe financial difficulties. Amidst a shifting landscape, several battery manufacturers have also had to restructure or cease operations, especially as the U.S. automotive industry reassesses its ambitious electric vehicle transition plans. Despite these industry hurdles, Redwood's founder and CEO, JB Straubel, assured remaining employees that the layoffs do not indicate a decline for the company. In a message to staff, Straubel emphasized that Redwood is currently stronger than ever, highlighting that its materials division is on a path to profitability and its energy storage business is gaining traction. He pointed out that Redwood continues to lead the U.S. battery recycling market while also celebrating recent partnerships with companies like Crusoe AI and electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian, aimed at supplying recycled batteries for their operations. Straubel noted that some areas of the company had grown too quickly and that the layoffs, affecting multiple divisions including engineering and operations, were necessary to realign with the company’s strategic goals. He expressed confidence that a leaner team would better position Redwood to achieve its critical projects, citing the company’s ability to adapt successfully to market fluctuations that have hindered its competitors. In a message reflecting on the layoffs, Straubel expressed gratitude for the contributions of the departing employees, who were informed they would receive severance packages, health benefits, and career transition support. He concluded by reaffirming his enthusiasm for Redwood's future as it aims to create a self-sustaining business that enhances the company's long-term value and solidifies its position in the critical materials and energy storage sectors.
