This time, we turn our attention to the iconic Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, now available in a DRM-free format from GOG. Raised in a household that favored Star Trek over Star Wars, my introduction to the galaxy far, far away came much later in life. My conservative upbringing meant that watching the original trilogy was forbidden until I was nearly an adult, around 17 years old. For my fundamentalist Christian family, the themes of Star Wars were seen as too influenced by 'Eastern mysticism,' potentially corrupting my youthful, impressionable mind. Interestingly, Star Trek was more acceptable to my parents, who appreciated the original series. Thus, my first true engagement with the Star Wars universe happened through video games, particularly through the lens of Shadows of the Empire. This classic title not only offered thrilling gameplay but also represented a unique moment in pop culture. At the time, Lucasfilm was striving to replicate the multimedia phenomenon that accompanied the original film releases, launching new stories, books, and toy lines in anticipation of the Special Edition re-releases of the original films. Born in 1984, I was around 12 years old when Shadows of the Empire made its debut on PCs, a perfect age to dive deep into the Star Wars lore. While my parents were strict about what movies and books I consumed, they surprisingly offered me more freedom with video games. I could not watch Star Wars, but I could immerse myself in games like Doom. My trips to Software, Etc. were filled with excitement as I picked up games using my allowance, free from the stringent oversight applied to other forms of media.
