Reddit bug caused lesbian subreddit to be labeled as a place for “straight” women

Reddit has recently acknowledged a significant issue affecting the descriptions of various subreddits on its Android app. For several weeks, users reported that descriptions crafted by moderators were appearing inaccurately, leading to widespread confusion. Initially, it was speculated that the problem stemmed from Reddit's attempts to utilize generative AI for creating new summaries for these communities. However, the platform has clarified that the mislabeling was actually due to a bug related to its AI-driven translation technology. Reports began surfacing a few weeks ago, highlighting how certain subreddit descriptions had been altered. For example, a member of the r/ModSupport community noted that the r/ThronesAndDominions subreddit changed from describing itself as “The wayward adventures of Dylan Carlson and the band Earth” to a more chaotic version: “The crazy adventures of Dylan Carlson and the band Earth.” The situation escalated when the r/actuallesbians subreddit was inaccurately labeled as “a place for straight and transgender lesbians,” instead of the intended “a place for cis and trans lesbians.” Other affected communities included r/autisticparents, where the description misleadingly categorized it as a group for “parents of autistic children.” One moderator, known as Paige_Railstone, expressed the anxiety these changes caused within their community, emphasizing that many users have previously experienced disruptions and felt understandably alarmed by the sudden alterations. In a recent statement, a Reddit administrator, identified by the username redtaboo, extended an apology and explained that the inaccuracies resulted from a faulty translation service that mistakenly translated English descriptions to inaccurate versions of English.
