Reddit sues AI giant Anthropic over content use

On Wednesday, Reddit initiated a lawsuit against the AI firm Anthropic, alleging that the company unlawfully scraped millions of user comments to train its Claude chatbot without obtaining explicit permission or offering compensation. Filed in a California state court, this lawsuit highlights the escalating conflict between content creators and AI developers regarding data utilization for training advanced language models that drive the generative AI surge. Anthropic, which boasts a valuation of $61.5 billion and substantial backing from Amazon, was established in 2021 by former OpenAI executives, the creators behind ChatGPT. Known for its Claude chatbot and various AI models, Anthropic emphasizes AI safety and responsible innovation. The lawsuit claims, "This case reveals the dual nature of Anthropic: the public persona that seeks to appear virtuous and law-abiding, and the hidden agenda that disregards rules to enhance its profits." According to the legal complaint, Anthropic has been using Reddit data for model training since at least December 2021, with CEO Dario Amodei co-authoring research that highlighted high-quality content for training purposes. The suit alleges that contrary to Anthropic's assertions of blocking its bots from accessing Reddit, the company’s automated systems continued to scrape data from Reddit's servers over 100,000 times in the following months. Reddit is pursuing financial damages and a court injunction to ensure Anthropic adheres to its user agreements, and has requested a jury trial. In response to the allegations, Anthropic stated, "We disagree with Reddit's claims and will vigorously defend our position." Reddit has previously entered licensing agreements with other AI leaders, such as Google and OpenAI, allowing them to utilize Reddit content while safeguarding user privacy and ensuring compensation for the platform. These agreements have positively impacted Reddit's stock price since its public listing in 2024, with shares rising over six percent following the announcement of the lawsuit. This legal action mirrors a broader trend, as musicians, authors, visual artists, and news outlets have also filed lawsuits against AI companies for using their data without permission or payment. AI firms often justify their practices by invoking fair use, contending that training AI on extensive datasets transforms the original content and is essential for innovation. Although many of these cases remain in their preliminary stages, their resolutions could significantly influence the future landscape of the AI industry.
