Reddit is using LLMs to solve a problem LLMs largely created

As the accessibility of powerful large language models (LLMs) increases, the internet faces an escalating threat from spam and bot-generated content. Reddit has taken a proactive stance by developing new tools powered by LLM technology aimed at mitigating this growing issue. This situation presents a unique irony: platforms are now employing the very technology that has contributed to the spam problem to fight it. The platform reports that it successfully blocks an astonishing 23 million spam views daily, while also identifying around 25,000 new spam posts and comments each day. Although automated spam reduction tools have been in use for years, Reddit claims that its updated systems are significantly more effective. According to a recent blog post, “We leverage LLMs to catch the highly subtle, coordinated patterns of fake behavior and artificial hype that older systems once missed.” Reddit's efforts appear to be yielding positive results, with the company noting a 20% reduction in user exposure to spam from January to March compared to the previous three-month period. Other social media platforms like YouTube, Meta, and Instagram allow the posting of AI-generated content as long as users disclose it. TikTok has even introduced features enabling users to control their exposure to AI-generated materials. The ability to detect AI-generated content more swiftly could also enhance the platforms' capacity to flag harmful content, such as hate speech. However, experts emphasize that AI-driven content moderation should be complemented by human oversight to ensure optimal outcomes in managing online safety.
