Reddit will require “fishy” accounts to verify they are run by a human

Reddit is taking a significant step to enhance user authenticity by requiring accounts that display suspicious or automated behaviors to undergo human verification. This initiative, announced by Reddit CEO Steve Huffman in a recent post, is aimed at curbing the influx of bots on the platform, particularly as AI technology continues to evolve and integrate into online spaces. Huffman emphasized the importance of this verification process, stating, "As AI becomes a bigger part of the Internet, we want to ensure that when you’re on Reddit, you can differentiate between interacting with a real person and a bot." However, he reassured users that the verification would only apply to accounts that Reddit suspects may be bots, a scenario he described as "rare" and affecting only a small number of users. Should an account be unable to verify its human status, it may face restrictions. Reddit plans to utilize third-party tools for this verification, ensuring that users' identities, usernames, and activity remain confidential. Huffman mentioned that current verification methods under consideration include passkeys, which provide some assurance of human interaction but lack definitive proof of individuality. Additionally, Reddit is exploring biometric verification options, such as those offered by World ID, which employs iris-scanning technology. Huffman believes that the internet requires robust verification solutions that maintain the separation of account information from personal identity. He also noted that while third-party government ID services may be necessary in specific regions, such as the UK, they are considered the least secure and private option. "When we are compelled to use this, we ensure that integrations are designed so that we never see your ID information, preventing any connection between your Reddit activity and your identity," he explained.
