Reddit says it’s looking for more acquisitions in adtech and elsewhere

Reddit is actively pursuing mergers and acquisitions, as announced during its fourth-quarter earnings call. The company's CFO, Andrew Vollero, expressed that Reddit is on the lookout for businesses that can either utilize Reddit’s expansive reach or contribute to expanding its user base. During the call, Vollero emphasized that the company aims to acquire capabilities, technologies, and firms that align with its growth strategy. Investors were eager for insights into these potential acquisitions, particularly regarding opportunities that could leverage Reddit’s scale. Vollero suggested that these opportunities should be viewed along a spectrum rather than being overly scrutinized. He noted that Reddit has successfully integrated acquired technologies in the past, stating, “It’s really been one of the secrets of our success.” This strategy has allowed Reddit’s adtech team to effectively incorporate new technologies rather than developing them from scratch, significantly reducing time to market. Vollero highlighted that these acquisitions have been instrumental in enhancing Reddit's monetization strategies as an ad-supported platform. However, he also made it clear that while past acquisitions in adtech have proven fruitful, the company remains open to exploring various avenues for growth. He hinted that Reddit might consider acquiring companies that could thrive within its ecosystem. The latest earnings report for the quarter reflected strong financial performance, with total revenue reaching $726 million, primarily driven by $690 million from advertising. Reddit's daily active unique users surged by 19% year-over-year, totaling 121.4 million, and its earnings per share of $1.24 exceeded analysts' expectations. Looking ahead, Reddit sees significant potential in generating revenue from its AI search initiatives, raising questions about the possibility of M&A in this domain as well. Recently, Reddit has increased its investments in AI, including the development of an AI search engine. The company has a history of acquiring startups to bolster its capabilities, such as its recent purchase of Memorable AI in August 2024, aimed at enhancing its advertising tools. This acquisition joins a series of others from 2022, which included firms focused on machine learning and ad targeting improvements.
