In a bold move, Reddit announced on Thursday its vision for an AI-powered search engine that could transform its business landscape, not only as a product but also as a significant revenue stream. During the fourth-quarter earnings call, company executives detailed their strategy to blend traditional search functionalities with cutting-edge AI capabilities, emphasizing the untapped market potential in this space. CEO Steve Huffman highlighted the advantages of generative AI search, asserting that it could deliver improved results for a wide range of queries. He noted that Reddit excels in addressing questions that lack definitive answers, offering multiple perspectives from its vast user base. In contrast, traditional search is likened to navigation—primarily directing users to specific links or subreddits. Huffman explained that large language models (LLMs) could outperform traditional methods in this context, leading Reddit to pursue this innovative approach. The company also reported a remarkable 30% increase in weekly active users engaging with its search feature, climbing from 60 million to 80 million over the past year. Moreover, the AI-driven Reddit Answers platform saw a surge in weekly active users, expanding from 1 million in early 2025 to 15 million by the end of the year. "There’s substantial growth and potential in this area," Huffman remarked, underscoring the promising trajectory of AI integration. To enhance user experience, Reddit is modernizing the interface of its AI answers, aiming to deliver more media-rich responses. Pilot programs are already in motion. The company is also strategically evolving from merely being a social platform to becoming a go-to source for information and answers. Starting in Q3 2026, Reddit plans to eliminate the distinction between logged-in and logged-out users, leveraging AI and machine learning to offer a personalized experience to every visitor. In its efforts to unify its core search with the AI component, Reddit has achieved significant milestones, including the introduction of five new languages for Reddit Answers and testing dynamic agents that provide enriched search results beyond mere text. Additionally, Reddit's content licensing business, which enables other companies to train their AI models using its data, is on the rise. This segment contributed to an 8% year-over-year increase in 'other' revenues, which reached $36 million in Q4 and climbed 22% to $140 million for the year 2025.
