A global team of researchers has reported that the world's oceans are experiencing unprecedented heat absorption, marking the eighth consecutive year of rising temperatures. Their findings, published in the journal Advances in Atmospheric Science, reveal that in 2025, oceans absorbed an astounding 23 zettajoules of heat, surpassing the previous year's record of 16 zettajoules. This significant increase underscores a troubling trend in climate change as scientists from the United States, Europe, and China collaborate to monitor ocean temperatures. To put this into perspective, a single joule is enough energy to power a tiny light bulb for one second, while a zettajoule represents one sextillion joules, equating to an unthinkable 23 quintillion joules in total this year. John Abraham, a thermal science professor at the University of St. Thomas and co-author of the study, likened the energy absorbed by the oceans to the explosive power of atomic bombs, suggesting that the heat from 2025 is equivalent to 12 Hiroshima bombs detonating underwater. Other comparisons he made include the energy needed to boil 2 billion Olympic-sized swimming pools or more than 200 times the total electrical consumption of the global population. Abraham humorously noted, "Last year was a bonkers, crazy warming year—that's the technical term." The oceans serve as the planet's primary heat reservoir, absorbing more than 90% of the excess heat trapped in the atmosphere. While some of this heat warms the surface, a significant portion penetrates deeper into the ocean, influenced by currents and circulation patterns. The ongoing rise in ocean temperatures raises serious concerns about the future of our climate and marine ecosystems.
