Social gaming platform Rec Room, once valued at $3.5B, is shutting down

In a shocking development for the gaming community, the social gaming platform Rec Room has announced it will cease operations on June 1. This news is particularly disheartening for the millions of players who have spent countless hours building and exploring in its vibrant virtual environments. Founded in 2016 by innovators Nick Fajt and Cameron Brown, Rec Room quickly became a beloved destination for social interaction, especially during the pandemic, when many turned to online platforms for connection. At its peak, the platform attracted over 150 million users and achieved a staggering valuation of $3.5 billion in December 2021. However, despite its popularity, the company faced significant challenges in monetizing its offerings. The financial realities began to weigh heavily on Rec Room, with operational costs soaring while revenues failed to match. Even with a devoted user base and the introduction of features like Maker AI for game creation, the company struggled to find a sustainable business model. Earlier this year, severe layoffs hinted at the underlying issues, and in their announcement, the team lamented, "We spent a long time trying to find a way to make the numbers work. But with the recent shift in the VR market, along with broader headwinds in gaming, the path to profitability has gotten tough enough that we’ve made the difficult decision to shut things down." Effective immediately, Rec Room will no longer allow new account registrations or friend requests, and creators will be unable to distribute monetized content. The platform will officially close its doors at 12 p.m. PT on June 1, marking the end of an era for a platform that once held so much promise in the gaming landscape.
