An early Indigenous site may not be early, but it doesn’t really matter

Recent research has revealed that the Monte Verde archaeological site in southern Chile is significantly younger than previously believed. Originally estimated to be around 14,500 years old, new findings suggest it dates back to approximately 8,000 years ago. This revelation comes from a team of archaeologists led by Todd Surovell from the University of Wyoming, who re-evaluated the site's timeline. Monte Verde has long been a crucial piece of evidence in understanding the early human settlement of the Americas. Its original age indicated that people had established themselves on the continent well before the conclusion of the last Ice Age. However, the updated dating does not substantially alter the overall narrative regarding the peopling of the Americas. The findings reaffirm that the "Clovis First" theory, which posited that the Clovis culture was the earliest known human presence in North America, remains unsupported. In 1997, a groundbreaking study claimed that Monte Verde was home to humans around 14,500 years ago, a timeline that contradicted prevailing archaeological consensus. At that time, most experts believed there were no inhabitants in the Americas until at least 13,000 years ago. Subsequent studies corroborated the original radiocarbon dates, revealing that materials such as wood and seaweed found in sediment layers dated back to the earlier estimate. This led to the assumption that the sediment itself—and thus the archaeological site—was similarly ancient. However, the latest analysis shifts the understanding of the timeline without undermining the significance of Monte Verde in the broader context of human migration into the Americas.
