Imagine enjoying a meal in a quaint sake bar on Japan's Noto Peninsula, effortlessly conversing with the chef through seamless, real-time translation. Kwon Ping Ho, founder of the Banyan Group, believes such advancements will dramatically reshape the travel landscape. With over three decades in hospitality, Ho, who opened his first resort in Phuket, Thailand, in 1994, highlighted that while artificial general intelligence (AGI) remains a topic of speculation, real-time translation tools are poised to make a significant impact in the industry. Speaking at the International Conference on Cohesive Societies in Singapore last month, he stated, "The one AI that I think will revolutionize our industry and travel is oddly enough, not AGI. That's science fiction because nobody can imagine what it's really going to lead to." AGI refers to a form of artificial intelligence capable of human-like reasoning and thinking, and experts remain divided on its timeline for development. In contrast, Ho sees real-time translation software as a force that could democratize travel, similar to how budget airlines transformed the industry in the late 20th century. "One of the biggest impediments to tourism is the language barrier. While group tours with bilingual guides have been the norm, experiential travel demands authentic interactions," Ho explained. He envisions that such translation technology will empower travelers to explore remote destinations without the anxiety of language differences, akin to the accessibility brought by low-cost airlines. "Instant translation will encourage people to venture into areas they might have previously avoided, making even the most secluded villages in Japan or Indonesia approachable," he added. Ho isn’t alone in recognizing the potential of AI in hospitality, although he acknowledges its current limitations. Brian Chesky, co-founder and CEO of Airbnb, expressed similar sentiments during a recent earnings call, stating that while AI will eventually transform travel, it is still in its early stages. Chesky compared the current state of AI to the internet in the mid-90s, suggesting that its full impact on travel platforms is yet to be realized. In summary, as technology advances, the travel industry anticipates a future where real-time translation could unlock new experiences and destinations for adventurous travelers.
