The competition for AI companions is heating up as Razer makes a bold entry into the arena. At the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show, the renowned gaming company showcased its innovative 3D holographic technology, dubbed Project AVA. This unique 'desk companion' utilizes xAI's Grok AI technology and is available for online reservation. While the concept of physical AI companions isn't entirely new, with smaller firms like Dipal and Code27 already in the game, Razer stands out as the largest player to venture into this space. While many tech giants, including xAI and OpenAI, recognize the potential of AI companions, most have focused on 2D representations. Razer is now shifting the paradigm with its 3D holograms. Project AVA allows users to choose from five different holographic forms for their AI companion. Options include a lively Razer logo named Ava and four humanlike avatars: catgirl Kira, tattooed Zane, glasses-wearing Faker, and the professional Sao, who resembles a popular Japanese influencer. Razer emphasizes that these avatars are still under development and may change. Standing at 5.5 inches tall, each Project AVA companion features human-like vision and audio sensing capabilities, enabling contextual awareness. Currently powered by xAI's Grok, there are plans to integrate additional AI technologies in the future. What can users expect from their Project AVA companions? Razer has outlined several functionalities, such as mood tracking, schedule planning, spreadsheet analysis, translation of conversations, and motivational support. However, the CEO of Razer, Min-Liang Tan, clarified that the product is not designed for romantic relationships, despite acknowledging the personal connections users may form with their AIs. The price for Project AVA has yet to be disclosed, but interested customers can secure their holographic companion with a $20 reservation fee. As the AI companion landscape evolves, it’s becoming increasingly clear that users are looking for more than just a virtual assistant; many are seeking companionship or even love. Companies like Replika have already established a foothold in the American market, while xAI joined the fray in 2025 with its anime-themed companions. With the rise of these AI companions, the industry is witnessing an intriguing shift towards more personalized interactions. As Razer gears up for the official launch expected in the latter half of 2026, the introduction of 3D AI companions could mark a new chapter in the quest for digital companionship.
