Billionaire investor Ray Dalio breaks down how China's philosophy on AI differs from the US

Billionaire investor Ray Dalio has shared insights on the contrasting philosophies regarding artificial intelligence (AI) between China and the United States. During a recent appearance at the Forbes Iconoclast conference in New York, Dalio emphasized that Chinese companies view AI as a fundamental utility, akin to electricity and running water, that should be accessible to every worker. In his analysis, Dalio pointed out that while US tech giants gear up for significant public market entries with a strong focus on profitability, Chinese firms are prioritizing widespread accessibility. He stated that China is channeling substantial revenue from exports into AI initiatives aimed at enhancing productivity and driving economic growth. Dalio, who has a long-standing admiration for China, noted that the country is not primarily concerned with making AI expensive or profitable. This strategy reflects China's earlier successes in dominating sectors like electric vehicles, with companies such as BYD rapidly expanding into global markets. In a follow-up panel discussion, JPMorgan Chase's Mary Callahan Erdoes echoed Dalio's sentiments, highlighting that Chinese AI leaders and policymakers do not share the same anxieties about job displacement that are prevalent in the US. Instead, she described China's focus on 'AI enablement' and its ambition to lead in emerging industries, suggesting that robotics could be the next sector where China seeks to establish dominance, much like it has with electric vehicles.
