In an unusual medical case, a 57-year-old man from Ireland has been diagnosed with a rare form of tuberculosis affecting his penis, potentially linked to his profession involving dead animals. This startling revelation came to light in an article published in ASM Case Reports. The man sought medical attention at a Dublin hospital after experiencing significant swelling, redness, and pain in his genital area, accompanied by a fever that persisted over a week. His medical history revealed that he had undergone a kidney transplant 15 years earlier, placing him on immunosuppressive medications that complicate the body's ability to fight infections. Initially, doctors suspected a bacterial skin infection, known as cellulitis, and began treatment with standard antibiotics. However, as his condition worsened, with increased redness and swelling, the medical team decided to consult specialists in infectious diseases. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the man had been experiencing a range of systemic symptoms such as night sweats, chills, and unexplained weight loss in the months preceding his hospital visit. Notably, he had extensive exposure to dead animals, having grown up on a farm, worked as a butcher, and participated in hunting. To identify the underlying cause, healthcare professionals conducted CT scans of his chest, abdomen, and pelvic area. The scans revealed numerous nodules in his lungs, indicative of miliary tuberculosis, a rare but serious infection that can manifest in various parts of the body, including the genitals.
