Scientists catch a shark threesome on camera

In a remarkable moment for marine biology, researchers have successfully recorded a rare mating event involving three leopard sharks—two males and one female—off the coast of New Caledonia. This groundbreaking observation is significant, as leopard sharks are classified as an endangered species, and witnessing their mating behavior in the wild is an extraordinary achievement. The research team, led by Hugo Lassauce, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia, collaborated with the Aquarium des Lagons to monitor shark activity in the region. Over the past year, Lassauce has been snorkeling daily, observing these fascinating creatures. While previous studies have shed light on leopard shark mating habits, they primarily focused on sharks kept in captivity, leaving a gap in understanding how these behaviors manifest in their natural habitat. During one snorkeling session, Lassauce noticed a female leopard shark resting on the ocean floor, accompanied by two males exhibiting classic courtship behavior by grasping her pectoral fins. Recognizing the significance of this encounter, he instructed his colleague to move the boat away to minimize disturbance. He then patiently waited on the surface, watching the sharks for an hour. As the sharks began to swim, the mating process unfolded quickly. The first male completed the act in just 63 seconds, followed by the second male in 47 seconds. Afterward, both males appeared exhausted, lying still on the seabed, while the female swam away, seemingly unscathed. This unprecedented footage provides new insights into leopard shark mating practices and highlights the importance of continued research to understand and protect these vulnerable species.
