Indian Uber rival Rapido raises $240M at $3B valuation

Rapido, an Indian ride-hailing platform, announced on Friday that it successfully acquired $240 million in new funding, elevating its valuation to an impressive $3 billion. This financial boost will enable the company to strengthen its position in India's competitive mobility sector. The funding round was spearheaded by Prosus and included contributions from existing backers such as WestBridge Capital and Accel. This investment forms part of a larger financing initiative totaling $730 million, encompassing both primary and secondary investments. Notably, Rapido was previously valued at $2.3 billion during a secondary funding event last year. According to Rapido co-founder Aravind Sanka, the company plans to utilize these fresh funds to expand its presence in high-growth areas, enhance its driver network, and improve technological efficiencies. "We are focusing on markets where demand exists, but supply is still fragmented," Sanka stated. He emphasized the company's commitment to bolstering supply and enhancing technology while accelerating its multi-modal transportation services. The latest funding round highlights the sustained interest from investors in India's mobility landscape, despite ongoing challenges like pricing pressures, regulatory hurdles, and profitability concerns. Established in 2015, Rapido operates in over 400 cities and has distinguished itself by facilitating ride-hailing for more affordable and flexible transport options, including motorbikes and autorickshaws, particularly in India's densely populated urban areas. The company's expansion efforts have also reached smaller towns. This funding announcement follows a recent visit by Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi to India, where Uber revealed plans to enhance its engineering and operational capabilities through the establishment of two new technology campuses and a partnership for a local data center. Earlier this year, Uber invested $330 million into its Indian subsidiary in a bid to bolster its competitive edge against local players such as Ola, Rapido, and Namma Yatri. Khosrowshahi acknowledged last year that Rapido had emerged as Uber's primary competitor in India. India's ride-hailing market is considered one of the most challenging globally, marked by fierce price competition, supply issues, elevated driver incentive costs, and dynamic regulatory changes. Despite these obstacles, Rapido has swiftly increased its market presence, even branching into the food delivery sector through its subsidiary Ownly last year.
