A wave of operational disruptions at airports across Europe, which began over the weekend, has been attributed to a ransomware attack, as confirmed by the European Union’s cybersecurity agency, ENISA, on Monday. In an official statement, ENISA noted, "We are aware of the ongoing disruptions in airport operations caused by a third-party ransomware incident. At this moment, we are unable to provide further details regarding the attack." The ransomware attack specifically targeted Collins Aerospace, a key provider of check-in systems for several major airports, including those in Berlin, Brussels, and London’s Heathrow. According to reports from Reuters, Collins Aerospace is actively collaborating with the affected airports to restore operational services. The Guardian further reported that the compromised software was Collins Aerospace’s MUSE system, which facilitates shared check-in desks and boarding gate assignments for multiple airlines, thus optimizing airport infrastructure. Collins Aerospace is a subsidiary of defense contractor RTX, but the company has not yet responded to inquiries for additional comments. As investigations unfold, the identity of the attackers remains unknown. The impact of the cyberattack has been significant, resulting in complications with check-in processes, numerous flight delays, and cancellations starting Friday night.
