Ram ends EV pickup truck plans

In a significant pivot, Ram has officially shelved its plans for an all-electric version of the popular 1500 REV pickup. Instead, the company is focusing on a new extended-range model, previously known as the Ramcharger. This shift comes from Stellantis, Ram's parent company, which announced that the demand for full-size battery-electric trucks has not met expectations. Stellantis indicated that the decision stems from a reassessment of its product strategy in light of declining interest in full-size electric pickups across North America. The company stated, "As demand for full-size battery-electric trucks slows in North America, Stellantis is reassessing its product strategy and will discontinue development of a full-size BEV pickup." The rebranded Ram 1500 REV will now utilize a unique approach, combining both battery power and a gas generator to achieve an impressive estimated range of 690 miles. This vehicle aims to set new standards in the half-ton truck segment by offering exceptional towing and payload capabilities. The transition follows a tumultuous journey for Stellantis's electric vehicle ambitions. After a high-profile unveiling at CES 2023 and various promotional events, the company's plans for the all-electric pickup became increasingly uncertain. Initially slated for production in 2024, the timeline was pushed to 2025 and then to 2026, as Stellantis grappled with the evolving market landscape. A spokesperson for Stellantis has confirmed that production of the extended-range Ram 1500 is still on track to commence in 2026, marking a new era for the brand as it navigates the changing automotive market.
