SpaceX and Blue Origin both submitted plans to get astronauts back to the moon faster, NASA says

SpaceX has proposed a streamlined approach to NASA aimed at accelerating the return of astronauts to the moon. This initiative comes in response to criticisms from Sean Duffy, NASA's acting administrator, who highlighted delays in the development of SpaceX's lunar landing system for the Artemis III mission. In a blog post released on Thursday, the aerospace giant, founded by Elon Musk, stated, "We have shared and are formally assessing a simplified mission architecture and operational concept that we believe will lead to a quicker return to the Moon while enhancing crew safety." Earlier this month, during an interview on CNBC's Squawk Box, Duffy expressed concerns about SpaceX's timeline, suggesting that the agency might reopen the landing contract to competitors like Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos' aerospace firm. A NASA spokesperson confirmed that plans from both SpaceX and Blue Origin are under review to expedite the Human Landing System (HLS) production. The spokesperson noted, "Following the evaluation, NASA will issue a Request for Information (RFI) to the broader aerospace sector to gather further proposals. A committee of experts will assess each submission to identify the optimal pathway forward in this critical space race, especially considering the growing geopolitical tensions concerning lunar exploration." NASA has given both companies until October 29th to submit their revised proposals. In a response to Duffy’s comments, Musk took to social media, making headlines with his remarks: "Sean Dummy is trying to kill NASA!" and further questioning Duffy's competency. SpaceX's Starship has completed 11 test flights to date, all uncrewed, with the last two deemed successful. However, the company has yet to demonstrate essential in-orbit refueling capabilities necessary for the upcoming Artemis III crewed lunar mission. Meanwhile, Blue Origin is actively working on a lunar lander, having received approximately $835 million from NASA since their contract commenced in 2023. The company intends to launch a smaller version of its lander, known as Blue Moon Mark 1. In the backdrop of this competition, China has announced plans to land its astronauts on the moon by the decade's end. In a recent meeting with NASA staff, Duffy expressed frustration over criticisms directed at the agency, particularly during a Senate hearing that questioned the U.S.'s ability to return astronauts to the lunar surface ahead of China. Aside from its moon ambitions, China is also preparing to send a new crew to its Tiangong space station, which it developed after being excluded from the International Space Station due to U.S. national security concerns. As part of its contract with NASA for the HLS, SpaceX is compensated upon reaching specific milestones. Reports indicate that NASA has disbursed around $2.7 billion to SpaceX for various developmental phases of the HLS program, with an additional $300 million pending for achieved milestones. The total potential earnings from the HLS contract could amount to $4.5 billion if all goals are met. SpaceX has claimed to have self-funded more than 90% of the program, suggesting expenditures exceeding $30 billion. Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, some NASA employees have been required to work without pay, particularly those involved in Artemis missions. As of now, neither SpaceX nor Blue Origin has commented in response to inquiries regarding these developments.
