Uber, Wayve and Waymo are headed towards a robotaxi showdown in London

Uber has announced a new interest list for its U.K. customers, allowing them to enhance their chances of being paired with an autonomous vehicle from Wayve, signaling an anticipated launch of a robotaxi service in London. This development places Uber in direct competition with Waymo, the self-driving technology leader owned by Alphabet, renowned for its dominance in the U.S. robotaxi market. On Monday, Uber introduced the interest list alongside a sleek, black Ford Mustang Mach-E outfitted with Wayve’s advanced self-driving technology. While Wayve is responsible for the vehicle's autonomous capabilities, Uber has designed the passenger experience, featuring interactive touchscreens that support 64 languages for seamless rider engagement. Although Uber has teased the upcoming service, it has yet to announce a specific launch date, stating that it will occur in the coming months, contingent upon regulatory approvals. Once operational, riders using the Uber app may find themselves matched with a Wayve vehicle at no extra charge compared to a traditional human-driven ride. To boost their chances of securing a robotaxi, users can adjust their preferences in the app’s settings, although they will still retain the option to opt for a human driver if desired. Initially, the Wayve robotaxis will operate with a human safety operator present, transitioning to fully driverless journeys in the future, according to Uber’s statements. Meanwhile, Waymo is also making strides in London, having commenced tests with its autonomous vehicles that similarly feature human safety operators. The competitive landscape is further complicated by the existing partnership between Uber and Waymo in the U.S., which has shown signs of strain. Once embroiled in a trade secrets lawsuit, the two companies agreed to collaborate in 2023, allowing Waymo's vehicles to be hailed via the Uber app in Phoenix. However, this partnership remains limited, as Waymo customers can directly summon robotaxis through their own app. In March 2025, the partnership expanded to include Austin and Atlanta, where customers must utilize the Uber app instead of Waymo’s for hailing rides. Despite their cooperation, tensions have emerged, with Uber executives publicly criticizing Waymo's vehicle safety in a surprising move for a business partner. In a bid to bolster its presence in the autonomous vehicle sector, Uber has introduced two new divisions focused on data and operations, emphasizing its ambitions in this burgeoning industry. The company has invested heavily in various autonomous vehicle startups, including Wayve, which recently secured $1.2 billion in funding from several strategic investors, with Uber contributing significantly. However, a regulatory hurdle looms on the horizon, as the U.K. government is still in the process of drafting autonomous vehicle regulations. This development may delay the anticipated robotaxi face-off, with applications for the government’s AV pilot program opening in May, suggesting that the regulatory framework may take time to finalize.
