Quartermaster is building a maritime hive mind

Navigating the vastness of our oceans poses significant challenges for governments, shipping firms, and insurers, primarily due to the sheer size of these bodies of water. Recognizing this issue, Quartermaster, a startup based in Arlington, Virginia, is creating an innovative solution dubbed 'SmartMast.' This technology consists of robust, weather-resistant sensors, including cameras and radios, installed on a ship's mast to transmit real-time maritime data. Combining these sensors with an advanced analytics platform, Quartermaster has developed what they describe as a 'continuous, distributed sensing network,' effectively turning ships into a collective intelligence system. According to Neil Sobin, the CEO and founder of Quartermaster, SmartMast surpasses the current maritime standard known as the Automatic Identification System (AIS), which is limited to basic location signals and is prone to manipulation. Sobin pointed out the vulnerabilities of AIS, stating that the system allows users to enter their own data, making it easy for malicious activities such as smuggling or sanctions evasion to occur. In an exclusive interview, he emphasized the urgent need for a more secure solution, stating, "In maritime, AIS is a completely broken system. You can take advantage of just how fragile it is." Quartermaster's innovative technology has recently attracted significant attention, culminating in a $43 million Series A funding round led by First Round Capital and Quiet Capital. Bill Trenchard, a partner at First Round who previously invested in Uber, remarked on the potential impact of Quartermaster's technology, emphasizing its ability to transform how maritime operators interact with the oceans. The startup reports that over 600 vessels equipped with SmartMast have already surveyed an impressive 10 million square miles of ocean. Their ambition extends beyond mere tracking; they aim to establish an infrastructure for intelligence applications that can assist in identifying ships, supporting marine autonomy research, and providing vital data to governments. Sobin expressed his belief in the broad applicability of Quartermaster's system, citing its role in over 20 maritime rescues as an example of its potential societal impact. While these rescues may not directly generate revenue, they enhance the company’s reputation and strengthen relationships with mariners, fostering a collaborative network. As the company looks to the future, Sobin envisions utilizing a substantial portion of the newly acquired funding to expand their engineering team, driving further advancements in their technology. He believes the ocean offers abundant opportunities for engineers to make meaningful contributions, distinguishing it from other tech sectors. Sobin remarked, "On the ocean, a single engineer can come in and make a significant impact in relatively short periods of time, simply because no one has worked on the space before."
