Quantum stocks have surged double-digits this week. Here's what's driving the big move

This week has been remarkable for quantum computing stocks, which have experienced significant double-digit increases. Companies such as Rigetti Computing, D-Wave Quantum, and Quantum Computing have all seen their shares rise by over 20%. Notably, Rigetti and D-Wave have more than doubled and tripled their values respectively since the beginning of the year. Arqit Quantum made headlines with a staggering 42% increase in its stock this week. This surge follows a series of optimistic developments within the quantum computing sector. Rigetti recently announced it secured purchase orders worth $5.7 million for two of its 9-qubit Novera quantum computing systems. Additionally, a collaboration involving the Danish government and Novo Nordisk’s owner led to a substantial investment of 300 million euros into a quantum venture fund. Nvidia also contributed to the excitement, emphasizing in a blog post the potential of accelerated computing to enable significant advancements in quantum technologies. Investors have rushed to embrace quantum computing this year, inspired by major tech players like Microsoft, Nvidia, and Amazon, all of whom have unveiled new chip innovations, substantial investments, and ambitious research initiatives. Smaller firms are not lagging behind either. IonQ, a Maryland-based company, made a strategic move by acquiring the UK startup Oxford Ionics for approximately $1.1 billion earlier this year, while Finland's IQM successfully raised $320 million in funding last month. Advocates for quantum computing claim it holds the key to solving intricate problems beyond the capabilities of conventional computers and managing vast datasets. However, skeptics caution that substantial hurdles remain before the technology can be effectively commercialized. Julian Kelly, director of hardware at Google Quantum AI, indicated in March that we might be five years away from a significant breakthrough in this field.
