Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 set to power next wave of Android flagships

Qualcomm has officially announced the name of its latest flagship mobile processor, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, which notably skips a generation from its previous model, the Snapdragon 8 Elite launched last year. This new chipset is set to debut during the Snapdragon Summit in Maui, Hawaii, on September 23. The naming convention for Snapdragon processors has puzzled many in the tech community. The recently released Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and its successor, the 8 Elite, have added to this complexity. In a blog post, Qualcomm attempted to clarify its naming strategy, stating, "Although it may appear that we have jumped generations, the reality is more straightforward and powerful. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 represents the fifth generation of our premium 8-series platforms, enhancing our product roadmap's clarity for consumers." Despite Qualcomm's reassurances, it remains to be seen how well this explanation will resonate with tech enthusiasts. Regardless, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is poised to power a majority of flagship Android devices over the coming months. Notably, Xiaomi has already confirmed that its upcoming Xiaomi 17 series will be the first to utilize this cutting-edge chipset. Ahead of its official launch, leaks have surfaced, including Geekbench scores allegedly from the Xiaomi 17 series. The chipset reportedly achieved a single-core score of 3025 and a multi-core score of 9178. For context, last year's Snapdragon 8 Elite-equipped devices, such as the OnePlus 13 and iQOO 13, scored 3024 and 9158, and 3016 and 9445 in single and multi-core tests, respectively. As the tech world awaits the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5's full capabilities, it could set a new benchmark for performance in flagship smartphones.
