In a landscape where AI coding tools are generating billions of lines of code monthly, a vital challenge has arisen: verifying that this software functions correctly. Qodo, a New York-based startup dedicated to developing AI agents for code review, testing, and governance, is positioning itself to address this critical need. The company has successfully raised $70 million in a Series B funding round, led by Qumra Capital, which brings its total funding to $120 million. Notable participants in this round include Maor Ventures, Phoenix Venture Partners, S Ventures, Square Peg, Susa Ventures, TLV Partners, Vine Ventures, as well as notable individuals like Peter Welender from OpenAI and Clara Shih from Meta. As enterprises increasingly adopt tools like OpenClaw and Claude Code, Qodo aims to enhance trust in AI-generated code. Many organizations are recognizing that while the speed of code production has increased, this does not guarantee the software's reliability or security. Unlike most AI review tools that concentrate on individual changes, Qodo takes a holistic approach, analyzing how modifications impact entire systems. This includes considerations of organizational standards, historical context, and risk tolerance, ultimately enabling companies to manage AI-generated code with greater confidence. Founded in 2022 by Itamar Friedman, who previously co-founded Visualead and led Alibaba's machine vision division, Qodo was inspired by pivotal experiences in his career. During his tenure at Mellanox, acquired by Nvidia, he learned that generating and verifying systems require distinct methodologies and tools. His time at Alibaba's Damo Academy further reinforced his understanding of AI's evolution towards reasoning capabilities over human language. By 2021-2022, just before the release of GPT-3.5, he recognized that AI would increasingly contribute to content generation, particularly in coding, leading him to believe that distinct systems for code generation and verification were essential. Despite the potential, a recent survey revealed a disconnect between trust and practice among developers: 95% expressed skepticism towards AI-generated code, yet only 48% routinely review it before committing. Friedman emphasized, "Code generation companies primarily focus on large language models (LLMs). However, ensuring code quality and governance requires more than LLMs alone. Quality is subjective and depends on organizational standards and historical context, which an LLM cannot fully comprehend. It's akin to asking an excellent engineer from one company to review code at another without understanding the internal context." While companies like OpenAI and Anthropic are making strides in the AI sector, their focus is predominantly on feature development rather than comprehensive solutions, according to Friedman. Although various startups are emerging in this space, many are still in their infancy and have yet to achieve widespread enterprise adoption. In response, Qodo is emphasizing performance to differentiate itself in a competitive market. The startup recently achieved the top spot on Martian’s Code Review Bench with a score of 64.3%, surpassing its nearest competitor by over 10 points and outperforming Claude Code Review by 25 points. This benchmark reflects Qodo's capability to identify intricate logic bugs and cross-file issues without inundating developers with excessive information. Recently, Qodo launched Qodo 2.0, an advanced multi-agent code review system that currently leads industry benchmarks, along with tools designed to learn each organization's unique definition of code quality. The company is already collaborating with major enterprises such as NVIDIA, Walmart, Red Hat, Intuit, and Texas Instruments, as well as rapidly growing firms like Monday.com and JFrog. As Friedman stated, "Every year has been marked by significant advancements—from Copilot and ChatGPT to full task automation. We are now entering a new phase: transitioning from stateless AI to stateful systems—moving from mere intelligence to 'artificial wisdom.' That is the foundation upon which Qodo is built."
