In a significant decision, the Python Software Foundation (PSF) has turned down a substantial $1.5 million grant from the government due to stipulations related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) set forth by the previous Trump administration. This grant would have marked the largest financial contribution in the foundation's history. The PSF had initially submitted their proposal in January 2025 to the National Science Foundation (NSF) as part of a program aimed at enhancing the safety, security, and privacy of open-source ecosystems. After undergoing a rigorous multi-round proposal writing and vetting process over several months, the foundation was optimistic about receiving the funding, especially given that only 36% of NSF grant applicants succeed on their first attempt. However, the excitement was short-lived as the PSF reviewed the terms tied to the grant. The organization expressed its concern about being required to agree to conditions that explicitly prohibited any activities promoting DEI or what the government termed 'discriminatory equity ideology.' These restrictions would not only impact the funded security initiatives but would also extend to all operations of the PSF. The potential repercussions of violating these terms were particularly alarming, as the NSF reserved the right to reclaim previously disbursed funds. Given the PSF's annual budget of $5 million and its modest team of 14, the foundation highlighted that the grant would have represented a substantial financial boost, yet it ultimately chose to uphold its mission of fostering a diverse and inclusive community of Python developers, which the grant requirements conflicted with.
