Publisher pulls horror novel ‘Shy Girl’ over AI concerns

Hachette Book Group has decided to withdraw the upcoming release of the novel "Shy Girl" due to concerns that artificial intelligence may have played a role in generating its content. Initially scheduled for release in the U.S. this spring, the decision also affects the book's availability in the United Kingdom, where it is currently on sale. The publisher's choice followed a detailed review process, yet speculation regarding the book's origins had been circulating among reviewers on platforms like GoodReads and YouTube, who questioned whether AI was involved in its creation. On the eve of Hachette's announcement, The New York Times inquired about these concerns, highlighting the heightened scrutiny surrounding the work. In response to the controversy, author Mia Ballard has firmly denied using AI in the writing of her novel. She attributes the issue to an acquaintance she employed to edit the original self-published version of "Shy Girl." Ballard expressed her distress over the situation, stating that she is considering legal action and lamenting the impact on her mental health and reputation, which she feels has been unjustly tarnished. Industry expert Lincoln Michel and others have pointed out that U.S. publishers often do minimal editing of titles that have been previously published, raising further questions about the publishing process in the digital age.
