Americans trust Fauci over RFK Jr. and career scientists over Trump officials

In a landscape marked by skepticism towards public health figures, Anthony Fauci, the renowned infectious disease expert, has emerged as a trusted authority among Americans. A recent survey conducted by the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania reveals that 54% of respondents express confidence in Fauci, starkly contrasting with the 38% who support Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the current Health Secretary and noted anti-vaccine activist. Despite Kennedy's efforts to malign Fauci, including a book filled with conspiracy theories aimed at discrediting him, the findings demonstrate a significant gap in public trust. Among those surveyed, only 9% reported being 'very confident' in Kennedy, while 25% felt the same about Fauci. The survey results also highlight a broader trend regarding public confidence in federal health agencies. Approximately 67% of participants expressed trust in the career scientists at the CDC, FDA, and NIH. In contrast, only 43% had confidence in the leaders of these agencies. Ken Winneg, managing director of survey research at APPC, noted that the public seems to be distinguishing between the reliable guidance provided by career scientists and the mixed perceptions of agency leaders, including Secretary Kennedy and Dr. Oz.
