Proton releases a new app for two-factor authentication

Proton, known for its commitment to privacy and productivity, has unveiled a new authenticator app designed to bolster user security through dynamic two-factor authentication codes. Available for free on multiple platforms, including iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux, the app enables users to seamlessly log in to their accounts with enhanced protection. The Proton Authenticator allows for synchronization of codes and accounts across all devices, ensuring users have their access codes at their fingertips. Staying true to its open-source ethos, Proton has equipped the app with end-to-end encryption to safeguard user data. Additionally, users can easily transfer their login codes from other authentication applications, making the transition smooth and hassle-free. A standout feature of the app is its ability to back up codes automatically and function offline, providing users with reliable access even without an internet connection. Eamonn Maguire, Head of Account Security at Proton, emphasized the importance of two-factor authentication for everyone, stating, "Proton Authenticator is built for anyone who wants a secure, transparent, and convenient way to protect their accounts." Maguire further noted that the app aims to ensure that security does not compromise convenience or privacy. He highlighted the app's design, which empowers users to manage their data and control access to their online accounts without reliance on major tech companies like Google or Microsoft. As a crucial addition to online security measures, two-factor authentication through an app offers a stronger defense against account takeovers. While SMS-based two-factor options exist, they are frequently susceptible to SIM swapping attacks. In tandem with this launch, Proton has also introduced a privacy-centric AI chatbot named Lumo, which prioritizes user confidentiality by not retaining conversation records or utilizing data for model training.
