In Austin, Texas, tensions are rising as Elon Musk eyes June 22 for the launch of Tesla's pilot robotaxi service. Demonstrators have gathered to voice their strong opposition to the initiative, driven by concerns over public safety and Musk's previous affiliations with the Trump administration. Advocacy groups such as the Dawn Project, Tesla Takedown, and Resist Austin organized a protest in downtown Austin, emphasizing their worries about the safety of Tesla’s partially automated driving systems. Tesla vehicles come equipped with either a standard Autopilot package or a premium Full Self-Driving (FSD) option, both of which have been linked to numerous accidents, some resulting in fatalities, as per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Musk recently showcased the upcoming robotaxi models, which are enhanced versions of the popular Model Y, set to utilize a future iteration of Tesla's FSD software. However, this “unsupervised” version of the FSD technology has yet to be made available for public use. In a demonstration during the protest, the Dawn Project displayed a Model Y equipped with the latest FSD software, illustrating its capabilities by zooming past a school bus with its stop sign extended, ultimately running over a child-sized mannequin placed in its path. Dan O'Dowd, CEO of the Dawn Project, has voiced significant concerns about Tesla's technology, emphasizing the need for transparency regarding the safety of robotaxis. Attendee Stephanie Gomez expressed her discontent with Musk's government involvement and her lack of confidence in Tesla's safety protocols, citing a troubling absence of safety testing results. Another protester, Silvia Revelis, also criticized Musk's political engagement while underscoring that safety remains the paramount issue. "Musk believes he's above the law," she stated. Tesla has yet to comment on the ongoing protests and the criticisms raised by the demonstrators, leaving many in the community anxious about the implications of the upcoming robotaxi launch.
