The rise of Artificial Intelligence chatbots has been remarkable, especially since the advent of ChatGPT in late 2022. While ChatGPT continues to dominate the chatbot landscape, Google's Gemini AI has also made significant strides with impressive new model releases. Its integration across various Google services like Gmail and Calendar enhances its appeal. However, one critical aspect of Gemini's functionality is its default practice of utilizing users' conversations to refine its upcoming AI models. Large language models (LLMs), such as Gemini, are designed to learn from extensive datasets, identifying patterns in language and context. While publicly available data is valuable, it often falls short of enabling the model to handle real-world queries effectively. Training on user interactions allows LLMs like Gemini to better understand common queries and personalize responses. This reliance on personal data can raise concerns, especially as users turn to chatbots for sensitive issues ranging from tax questions to emotional support. If you're uncomfortable with Google using your chats for training, you can easily opt out. To prevent Gemini from using your personal conversations for training, navigate to the 'Gemini Apps Activity' setting in your account. Google plans to rename this setting to “Keep activity” in a forthcoming update, but the steps to disable it will remain unchanged: 1. Visit Gemini.Google.com and log into your Google account. 2. Click on the menu icon on the left side, then select Settings and help. 3. Go to Activity to access the relevant settings page. 4. Choose the option to turn off Gemini activity to stop the chatbot from training on your discussions. 5. For added privacy, consider deleting past Gemini activity to erase data collected prior to disabling the feature. Google retains your Gemini activity for 72 hours before it is permanently deleted from their servers. If you utilize multiple Google accounts for Gemini, ensure you repeat this process for each account to fully protect your conversations. For mobile users, open the Gemini app, tap on the account settings in the top right corner, select Gemini apps activity, and follow the same instructions to disable activity tracking and delete previous data as necessary.
