AV startup Pronto.ai acquires off-road autonomous vehicle rival SafeAI

Pronto.ai, a San Francisco-based startup specializing in autonomous systems for off-road vehicles, has made headlines with its acquisition of rival SafeAI. This strategic move aims to enhance Pronto's talent pool and technological capabilities within the autonomous haulage space. CEO Anthony Levandowski highlighted the acquisition’s significance, noting that the integration of SafeAI’s engineering team and intellectual property will bolster Pronto's resources. While the financial details remain undisclosed, insiders suggest the acquisition price was in the millions. In a recent interview, Levandowski emphasized the competitive landscape, stating, "In the autonomous haulage system space, there’s really kind of two players — it’s SafeAI and us." He explained that both companies have approached the market differently, and acquiring SafeAI aligns with Pronto's growth strategy. Founded in 2018, Pronto.ai utilizes advanced sensors, cameras, and artificial intelligence to operate haul trucks autonomously. The startup also launched Pollen Mobile, a peer-to-peer open-source mobile data network, in 2022, which facilitates high-speed data exchange without dependence on traditional carriers, particularly beneficial in areas with limited connectivity. With a lean workforce of about 40 employees, Pronto aims to expand its customer base, including international markets, through this acquisition. Last year, the company strengthened its partnership with Heidelberg Materials North America, a crucial player in the building materials sector, following a successful pilot at the Bridgeport Quarry in Texas. The technology developed by Pronto is already implemented in Komatsu haulage trucks, which autonomously operate at the quarry. Earlier this year, the startup announced plans to deploy over 100 autonomous trucks in collaboration with Heidelberg while also expanding its team in Brazil. The acquisition of SafeAI positions Pronto to cater to a wider range of client needs, from small quarries to large mines, and allows for a diverse technology portfolio. Notably, Pronto is recognized for its camera-only approach, while SafeAI employs a multi-sensor strategy, incorporating on-vehicle cameras, radar, and lidar. This integration will enable Pronto to offer enhanced safety features, including SafeAI’s ASIL D-certified safety framework, the highest safety integrity level in the industry.
