One dose of gene-editing drug cut bad cholesterol 62% for months in small trial

Known as VERVE-102, this innovative therapy was tested on a small group of 35 patients, with interim findings recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine. However, researchers did observe a slight, temporary increase in a liver enzyme, indicating minor liver injury, which is where the drug exerts its effects. Among the trial participants receiving the most substantial dose, bad cholesterol levels—specifically low-density lipoprotein (LDL)—dropped by an impressive 62%, reaching an average of 78 mg per deciliter. For individuals grappling with high cholesterol, such a reduction could potentially halve the risk of cardiovascular diseases associated with arterial plaque buildup, provided the effects are maintained over a 20-year period. While the trial has only gathered data for up to 18 months, the results thus far indicate that VERVE-102's positive impact on cholesterol levels is holding steady across all participant groups. This therapy employs a cutting-edge mRNA-based gene-editing technique, utilizing nanoparticles that facilitate the delivery of genetic instructions directly to liver cells, which are critical for cholesterol processing. The mRNA instructs the cells to produce a specialized protein capable of making precise alterations to DNA, utilizing a modified version of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing technology. This approach not only targets specific genes but also ensures that the necessary changes are made effectively, marking a significant progression in the field of genetic therapies for managing cholesterol levels.
