Jeff Bezos’s Prometheus raises $12B to build an ‘artificial general engineer’ for the physical world

Prometheus, a groundbreaking AI startup co-founded by Jeff Bezos alongside Vik Bajaj, the former co-founder of Verily, has successfully raised $12 billion, reaching a staggering valuation of $41 billion. This latest funding round attracted significant investments from notable financial institutions, including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and BlackRock, along with contributions from Bezos himself. This marks the second significant fundraising effort for Prometheus, which initially launched last year with a capital raise of $6.2 billion. The company is on a mission to develop what it refers to as an 'artificial general engineer'—a sophisticated software solution designed to automate the design and manufacturing processes of intricate physical systems, ranging from jet engines to pharmaceutical compounds. Prometheus aims to transform the engineering landscape by replacing substantial portions of traditional engineering tasks with artificial intelligence. Bezos, in a recent interview, shared his perspective on the future of work, suggesting that the productivity enhancements brought about by AI could lead to a phenomenon he calls 'labor scarcity.' This term describes a scenario where the demand for human workers exceeds the available supply, a view that stands in contrast to other tech leaders who predict widespread job losses. Bezos expressed optimism, stating, 'Significant productivity in the economy is going to raise the standard of living.' He envisions a shift in household dynamics, suggesting that dual-income families may transition to single-income households, and individuals currently working overtime might find themselves with more free time. Currently, Prometheus employs around 150 individuals across its offices in San Francisco, London, and Zurich, and is keeping its developments largely confidential. Bezos noted that a considerable portion of the newly acquired funding will be allocated to meet the company's extensive computational demands. Having a wealth of experience in managing large-scale labor forces from his tenure at Amazon, where he remains the executive chairman and largest shareholder, Bezos is acutely aware of the complexities associated with workforce dynamics. Amazon, under CEO Andy Jassy, has recently undergone significant layoffs, reflecting a broader trend towards automation. With its $41 billion valuation, Prometheus stands out as one of the most highly valued AI startups in history and represents one of the most substantial investments in the physical AI sector. The growing interest from venture capitalists in physical AI underscores a belief that this domain is inherently more resilient than traditional software, as the physical environment creates barriers that pure code cannot replicate.
