Private space pilots are flying orbital missions for the US Space Force

In a groundbreaking development, private companies are stepping up to tackle the complexities of orbital reconnaissance, a task traditionally handled by military forces. Recently, two innovative startups, True Anomaly and Rocket Lab, successfully orchestrated a sophisticated rendezvous mission for the U.S. Space Force that could easily be likened to a scene from a high-stakes action film. During the mission, dubbed Victus Haze, the two competing satellites engaged in a close encounter in space, allowing one to capture images of the other. This operation is particularly significant as nations like the U.S., Russia, and China are increasingly deploying advanced space weaponry, necessitating timely and accurate reconnaissance. True Anomaly's CEO, Even Rogers, a former military space expert, emphasized the importance of understanding the capabilities of rival nations. "China and Russia regularly launch new technologies into space, and it’s crucial for the Space Force to be aware of these advancements. Currently, there are gaps in our collection capabilities," he noted. The June mission was remarkable for its rapid execution. Rocket Lab, known for its competitive edge against SpaceX, launched a satellite named Puma just 16 hours and 42 minutes after receiving launch authorization—an exceptionally quick turnaround in the industry. Meanwhile, True Anomaly's Jackal satellite was already positioned in orbit, ready to intercept Puma. In an impressive feat, the Jackal utilized its onboard sensors to locate and identify Puma from a distance of 2,000 kilometers, subsequently maneuvering close enough to capture classified imagery of the satellite before returning to its original orbit. Rogers claimed, "Outside of human-spaceflight missions by NASA and the Space Force, this operation ranks as one of the most complex rendezvous tasks between two spacecraft in contemporary history." Executing such a maneuver in orbit, where both satellites travel at speeds nearing 17,500 mph, is not a trivial challenge. Previous private missions, including those by Northrop Grumman and Astroscale, have operated on a slower timeline, but True Anomaly and Rocket Lab are gearing up for even more demanding exercises in the near future, potentially involving evasive actions and inspection maneuvers. Founded in 2022, True Anomaly aims to develop both the hardware and software necessary for the advanced missions assigned to the U.S. Space Force since its establishment in 2019. The recent demonstration represents a significant stride toward realizing their vision. Seth Winterroth, a partner at Eclipse Ventures and board member of True Anomaly, remarked, "The company's strength lies not in any single spacecraft design or software but in a profound understanding of tactical operations in this domain." With over $1 billion in funding, including a substantial $650 million round in March, True Anomaly seeks to secure contracts under the Space Force's $6.2 billion Andromeda program, which aims to leverage private innovation for agile reconnaissance solutions. "Demonstrated capabilities are crucial in this competitive landscape, and proven flight performance speaks volumes," Rogers concluded.
