Recent revelations have surfaced regarding sensitive ChatGPT interactions inadvertently appearing in Google Search Console (GSC), a tool primarily used by developers to track website performance rather than monitor private discussions. This unexpected intrusion has raised significant privacy alarms among users. Beginning in September, unusual queries—sometimes stretching over 300 characters—were found in GSC reports. These entries, which only displayed user inputs, appeared to originate from unsuspecting individuals seeking assistance from the AI chatbot for personal or business dilemmas, under the assumption their conversations would remain confidential. Jason Packer, the owner of the SEO and web development firm Quantable, was one of the first to highlight this troubling issue in a comprehensive blog post last month. To investigate further, he partnered with Slobodan Manić, a web optimization consultant recognized for his investigative skills. Together, they conducted tests that they believe revealed substantial evidence of OpenAI potentially scraping data from Google Search using real user prompts. Their findings appeared to indicate that user privacy was being compromised, as OpenAI might have been utilizing this search data to enhance user engagement in ways that would not typically be disclosed. While OpenAI did not respond to specific inquiries from Ars Technica regarding the validity of Packer and Manić’s claims, a company spokesperson acknowledged awareness of the issue and stated that a glitch impacting a limited number of search queries had been resolved. Packer expressed satisfaction with the prompt resolution from OpenAI but raised concerns that the company’s response did not clarify whether scraping had indeed occurred, leaving uncertainties regarding the full extent of the problem.
