Going chain-free with the Priority Apollo gravel bike

Priority Bicycles has made waves in the cycling community with its innovative Apollo Gravel bike, which features a unique belt drive system. This model is particularly well-suited for commuting, while also offering a competent performance on gravel paths, as long as the terrain remains manageable. The Apollo Gravel bike is available in two frame materials: aluminum and titanium. I had the opportunity to test the aluminum version, priced at $1,999, while the titanium variant is offered at $3,999. Weighing in at 24 pounds (10.9 kg), the aluminum model is slightly heavier than its titanium counterpart. Both bikes are equipped with 40 mm WTB or Goodyear tires and come with tubeless-ready WTB i23 ST wheels, although the test bike was fitted with inner tubes. Additionally, semi-hydraulic disc brakes ensure reliable stopping power. One of the standout features of the Apollo is its Shimano Alfine 11 hub paired with a Gates Carbon Drive Belt, creating an ideal combination for gravel biking. The belt drive eliminates the need for traditional chain maintenance, meaning that after a day of riding on gravel, cleaning the bike is straightforward—just a quick hose down without the hassle of grease or chain lube. Belt drives are known for their silent operation and impressive durability, often lasting up to three times longer than conventional chains. When it comes to gearing, the Shimano Alfine 11 hub provides a remarkable 409 percent gear range, surpassing the typical 400 percent range found in many 1x gravel bikes, such as the Trek Checkpoint SL 7 that was reviewed previously. Moreover, the Apollo is equipped with a Pinion Smart.Shift gearbox that enhances the biking experience through an app. This feature allows riders to customize their shifter buttons, making it intuitive to switch between higher and lower gears. There's even an auto-shift option that seamlessly adjusts the gear when coming to a stop, a convenience that proves beneficial for those who prefer to keep moving as much as possible. In summary, the Priority Apollo Gravel bike embodies a blend of innovation and practicality, making it a fantastic option for both commuting and light gravel rides, with the added bonus of reduced maintenance and a smooth riding experience.
