Amazon's Prime Day event has proven to be a significant catalyst for U.S. e-commerce, generating a remarkable $24.1 billion in online sales during the promotional period from July 8 to 11. This surge represents a staggering 30.3% increase in spending compared to the previous year, akin to the combined sales of two Black Fridays. A recent analysis by Adobe Analytics revealed that traffic driven by generative AI products, such as chatbots and browsing tools, skyrocketed by an astonishing 3,300% year-over-year. This surge in AI-assisted shopping suggests a growing consumer preference for utilizing these innovative tools while navigating online retail sites. Adobe's e-commerce division analyzed over 1 trillion visits to U.S. retail websites, covering 100 million products across 18 categories. While generative AI traffic saw impressive growth, it still lags behind traditional channels like email and paid search, the latter capturing a 28.5% share of e-commerce sales during Prime Day, up 5.6% from last year. Social media influencers emerged as another influential factor in driving sales, accounting for 19.9% of online retail during Prime Day. This marked a 15% increase year-over-year, with influencers converting shoppers into buyers at a rate ten times more effective than social media in general. Although Amazon has not disclosed specific sales figures for Prime Day, the company announced that this year's event was its most successful ever, with record sales and a higher volume of items sold than in previous years. The decision to expand the event to four days has complicated year-over-year comparisons, but initial reports indicated a 35% decline in sales during the first two days compared to last year, which later rebounded with a 165% increase by the third day. Top-selling categories during this year's Prime Day included home appliances, which saw a dramatic 112% rise in online sales compared to June averages. Other notable categories experiencing robust growth were office supplies (up 105%), electronics (up 95%), books (up 81%), tools and home improvement products (up 76%), home and garden (up 58%), and baby and toddler items (up 55%).
