The Wayback Machine debuts a new plugin designed to fix the internet’s broken links problem

The Internet Archive, a dedicated non-profit organization focused on preserving digital history, has unveiled an innovative tool aimed at enhancing the health of online content. This week, the Archive announced its collaboration with Automattic, the parent company of WordPress, to launch a new plugin called Link Fixer. This tool is specifically designed to address the persistent issue of 'link rot.' Link rot refers to the frustrating reality that many online articles gradually accumulate broken links—URLs that once led to active pages but now result in error messages or inaccessible destinations. According to a 2024 Pew Research study, nearly 40% of links that were functional in 2013 are no longer operational. This phenomenon of 'digital decay' affects a wide variety of web pages, including those from news outlets, government sites, Wikipedia, and even social media posts. The Link Fixer plugin works by scanning WordPress posts for outbound links and cross-referencing them with the Wayback Machine's extensive archive. If a link lacks an archived version, the plugin automatically creates a new snapshot of the content. This ensures that if a linked webpage goes offline, users are seamlessly redirected to the archived version, preventing any disruption in information access. Additionally, the plugin not only safeguards external links but also archives the user's own posts, thereby enhancing their longevity. It continually monitors link statuses and, should an original link become active again, the plugin will revert to redirecting users to that page instead of the archived version. A detailed guide on GitHub reveals that the plugin is user-friendly and offers various customization options. Users can set their preferred frequency for link validity checks, with the default setting being every three days.
