Portland Leather Goods was buried in social media messages. An AI startup helped them automate the process.

Portland Leather Goods, a prominent player in the leather goods market, has seen its social media presence flourish, boasting nearly one million followers across platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. However, managing the sheer volume of interactions has posed a significant challenge for the company's small social media team, which consists of just five members. Chief Marketing Officer MacCoy Merkley highlighted the struggle to keep up with the staggering 70,000 monthly messages, comments, and mentions they received, often extending response times to as long as 48 hours. Recognizing the need for a more efficient system, the company embarked on a quest for an AI-powered social media management tool. After evaluating various options, they partnered with Silicon Valley-based Nectar Social, which had recently secured $10.6 million in venture capital funding. This collaboration aimed to centralize their social media communications and streamline the workflow across multiple platforms, allowing the team to manage conversations and responses from a single interface. With the integration of Nectar Social, Portland Leather Goods has transformed its approach to social media engagement. The AI tool assists in drafting responses and managing real-time interactions, enabling the team to maintain high engagement levels without the need for additional hires. Merkley emphasized the company's commitment to incorporating AI into various business processes, which has become a directive for their entire workforce. The partnership also allows for a tailored approach to customer interactions, with the AI trained to reflect the company’s unique voice and tone. This ensures that responses align with brand guidelines, whether casual or formal. The initial pilot program, launched in August 2025, involved uploading brand guidelines to enhance the AI's ability to handle diverse customer inquiries. Since fully deploying Nectar Social’s tools, the average response time has been reduced to just over one hour during business hours. This efficiency proved crucial during a recent viral marketing moment on TikTok, where the brand saw over 4,000 mentions in a mere 36 hours. Utilizing AI to manage this surge in engagement allowed Portland Leather Goods to effectively communicate with potential customers and maintain a strong brand presence amidst the rapid influx of interest.
