In a significant move, Aylo, the parent company of popular adult sites including Pornhub, has announced it will block access to its platforms in the United Kingdom starting February 2. This decision comes after the company faced challenges in complying with the UK's Online Safety Act (OSA), which requires websites with adult content to verify the ages of their visitors. Rather than implementing age verification measures, Aylo has opted for a complete shutdown of its services in the UK. However, users who have previously verified their identity will still retain access to their accounts. Aylo expressed concerns about the effectiveness of the OSA, stating, "Despite the clear intent of the law to restrict minors’ access to adult content, our experience suggests that the OSA has failed to achieve that objective." The company argued that the law has inadvertently driven traffic to less regulated areas of the internet, raising issues regarding the privacy and data security of UK citizens. In contrast, Ofcom, the UK regulator responsible for enforcing the OSA, countered Aylo’s claims, stating that adult sites can either comply with age verification requirements or face access restrictions. Ofcom emphasized that technology solutions could be developed to meet these requirements effectively. The implementation of age verification technologies has sparked debate across the globe. While these measures are aimed at enhancing online safety for children, privacy advocates argue that such systems, particularly those reliant on cloud-based methods, pose risks to adult users by collecting sensitive personal data. Aylo noted that it has often been one of the few major platforms adhering to age verification laws in other regions, yet it has seen traffic shift to larger, non-compliant sites. Although the OSA includes penalties for non-compliance, Aylo claims that enforcement has been minimal, citing that only 4chan has faced fines thus far. Ofcom has contested this, asserting that it has taken rigorous action against multiple non-compliant adult sites and has already imposed a £1 million fine on a porn provider. This decision to limit access within the UK aligns with Aylo’s strategy regarding compliance with age verification laws in the United States, where similar restrictions have led to site blockages in various states. Aylo has expressed concerns that such age verification systems could increase the risk of data breaches, a valid concern given past incidents where Pornhub’s data was compromised, exposing sensitive user information.
