Polymarket has decided to remove a betting forum related to the U.S. military's rescue mission, following increasing political scrutiny. This move comes after Rep. Seth Moulton, a Democrat from Massachusetts, criticized the platform for allowing users to place bets on when the U.S. would confirm the rescue of two airmen after an F-15E fighter jet was downed over Iran. Moulton expressed his outrage on social media, labeling the betting page as 'DISGUSTING' and highlighting the personal stakes involved. 'They could be your neighbor, a friend, a family member,' he stated, emphasizing the insensitivity of wagering on their fate. In response, Polymarket acknowledged the issue, stating, 'We took this market down immediately as it does not meet our integrity standards.' The platform admitted it should not have allowed the market to be posted and is currently investigating how it bypassed their internal checks. The U.S. military is actively searching for the missing airman from the incident, with one crew member already rescued. Moulton has taken a firm stance against prediction markets, recently implementing a policy that prohibits his staff from engaging with platforms like Polymarket or Kalshi. He believes this is crucial for ensuring that decisions made by Congress are not influenced by betting outcomes. Furthermore, Moulton raised concerns about Donald Trump Jr.'s involvement in these markets, suggesting he may have access to sensitive information. This controversy has ignited discussions in Washington about the need for tighter regulations on betting platforms, especially those that allow wagers on sensitive topics such as elections and military actions. Legislation has been proposed by a group of congressional Democrats to restrict betting on these critical issues, while earlier this year, a group of senators urged the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to clarify regulations against contracts involving an individual's death, citing potential national security risks. Recently, the CFTC also initiated legal action against three states over perceived attempts to bypass its regulatory authority concerning prediction markets.
